Common Myth: Military Spending consumes more and more…

Andrew Sullivan wrote a massive rant about this the other day. Here’s a chart of the actual percentage of GDP since 1962 spent on national defense:

For those worried about American fiscal decline – here’s a chart that shows the total mandatory spending on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid (in billions excluding net interest):

Could this have something to do with the fact that people don’t feel as good about the country spending money on national defense as they do on say…social programs?
